West African Ensemble Drumming

Students will be completely enthralled in this experience as master percussionist Adam Rugo applies a variety of techniques: stories, artifacts, clapping, singing and playing authentic instruments from the Ivory Coast of Africa. This workshop enables students to understand the complex relationship between culture and music in modern West Africa.

About Rugo, Adam


Adam Rugo Adam Rugo is a musician and educator specializing in African & Afro-Cuban percussion. He began his studies with African master percussionists in 1991 while a Teaching Fellow at Washington University. He has studied with many of the foremost African percussionists in the U.S. and made a study trip Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa, in 2000. Adam has accompanied master African dancer Diadie Bathily and has performed with Nuclear Percussion Ensemble and Madahoochi. Since 2006, he has been Music Director of Circus Harmony, the professional children's circus at City Museum. He performed in Metro Theater Company's productions of Iceman, Earth Songs, Stix & Stonz, and composed music for New Kid. Adam won the Young Audiences Program Award for Teaching Excellence in 2001.
