CDO Capoeira; Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts & Culture NEW
A Capoeira residency begins with a sequence of basic exercises and stretches, helping the beginner to develop flexibility. The next phase is to master the rhythmic step called GINGA, a graceful side-to-side step that gives the student a physical base from which to execute all kicks, escapes, and acrobatic moves. Students progress towards training in partners, where the practice of various Capoeira sequences allow them to develop an idea of how to move and what to do inside the RODA, the circle in which the game is played, with the accompaniment of capoeira songs and instruments. This program will teach capoeira movements with a focus on individual expression of each movement, as well as introduce the musical and historical components of the art. Classes include song and instrument work, thorough warm ups, drills, partner sequences, tumbling, and games. Students need not have any former gymnastics, acrobatics, or martial arts experience.

About Schultz, Tebogo
Tebogo Schultz is from Botswana, a small country in southern Africa. Capoeira found him 12 years ago at the University of Illinois when he played Tekken 3, a video game that featured a character named Eddie Gordo. Gordo’s amazing movements were the digitized movements of a real capoeira master. In 1998, Tebogo studied Portuguese and Economics at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), where he began training capoeira. He returned from Brazil and founded the UIUC Capoeira Club. Tebogo have been a student of Contra-Mestre Denis Chiaramonte for the last seven years. He's been to Brazil four times to learn from the great masters of the art. Tebogo travels the United States as Contra-Mestre Denis Chiaramonte’s student to participate in workshops to refine the various aspects of my game. It is under the guidance of Contra Mestre Denis and GrandMaster Suassuna that he continues to share the gift of Capoeira with others.
