From Story To Stage: Creative Drama for Young Children NEW
Bring your curriculum to life through theater! Using the actor’s tools of the body, the voice and the imagination, students transform into characters and work together to perform in a play chosen by the classroom teacher. Possible plays include adaptations of cross-cultural tales which exemplify character education principles and connect to communication arts and social studies lessons. Teachers can also customize the residency by selecting a piece of literature for Rowan to adapt for the stage (additional fee applies).
Each session begins with physical and vocal warm-ups and exercises to encourage imaginative discovery. Students learn basic acting skills including articulation and vocal projection and gain creative confidence. Cooperation, respect and perseverance are built as they act together on stage. Story themes come alive as the students prepare the play for performance.
Teachers may choose from the following three plays or request that a particular story be adapted for the stage: The Biggest Turnip Ever -- a Russian folktale about the meaning of community and the ability of one person to make a difference. Amma’s Birthday -- a Sri Lankan tale about a girl seeking advice about the best gift for her mother, which she discovers is love. Together We Will Build This House -- a Norwegian fairy tale about the importance of working together and being open to fresh ideas.
